Dr. Rosemary Namusisi Nsibirwa Kigonya was born on 30th July 1945 to Katikiiro Martin Luther Nsibirwa and Jjaja Kasalina of Nakulabye.

From an early age, she demonstrated strong academic promise and a commitment to service that would later define her distinguished medical career.

She began her formal education at Gayaza Junior School and later attended Gayaza High School, where she completed both her Ordinary and Advanced Level studies. Her academic excellence earned her admission to Makerere University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). During her time at Makerere University, she resided in Mary Stuart Hall, fully immersing herself in university life and medical training.

Following her undergraduate studies, Dr. Rosemary Kigonya undertook postgraduate training and specialized in Haematology, focusing on diseases of the blood. This specialization marked the beginning of a long and impactful career in one of the most critical fields of medicine.

Marriage and family

On 6th January 1973, she married Dr. Edward Kigonya, also a medical doctor. Their union was both a personal and professional partnership grounded in shared values of service and dedication to healthcare.

Together, they were blessed with seven children: Peter, Edward, Simon, Catherine, Angella, Rosemary, and Maria Kigonya.

Dr. Rosemary Kigonya also took great pride in her role as a grandmother. Her grandchildren include Oliver, Luca, and Edward Habiyakare, children of Dr. Catherine Kigonya, as well as Matthew, Rosie, and David Muwanguzi, children of Angella Kigonya-Muwanguzi.

Medical Career

Professionally, Dr. Rosemary Kigonya served with distinction at Mulago Hospital, where she rose through the ranks to become a Senior Consultant Haematologist. Her work contributed significantly to patient care, medical training, and the advancement of haematology in Uganda. In addition to her public service, she also practiced privately at Nile Clinic for many years, working alongside her husband, Dr. Edward Kigonya.

Dr. Rosemary Namusisi Nsibirwa Kigonya’s life reflects a remarkable blend of professional excellence, dedication to family, and lifelong service to medicine. Her legacy continues through her contributions to healthcare and through the lives of her children and grandchildren.
