Maliyamu Nakimu (Kamya)

Maliyamu Nakimu Nsibirwa was born in 1910 to Damali Mukuubwa and Martin Luther Nsibirwa, who would later become a two-time Katikkiro of Buganda. Her position as the first-born daughter of Jajja Mukubwa and the Katikkiro Nsibirwa, placed her in a position of seniority within the family lineage.
Marriage and Widowhood
Maliyamu Nakimu Nsibirwa was married to Mw’ Kamya, and the couple resided at Kungu. Her husband passed away at a relatively early age, leaving Maliyamu a young widow. She thereafter raised her children as a single mother with resilience and determination.
Children
Through her union with Mwe. Kamya, she was blessed six children, all daughters who are listed in below birth order.
- Norah Erivaniya Namuudu Kafero (RIP)
- Julia Byesigye (Nurse), who later settled in Norway,
- Nantege Waibi (Teacher) living in Iganga
- Rose Nakabiri Musala living in Namavundu, Gayaza
- Jane Kamya (Social Worker) who married Professor Sengendo
- Namaale Kizito
Family Support and Education
After the passing of her husband, her siblings stepped in and supported their widowed elder sister, offering education and career advice to her daughters, later a few of her daughters followed into the professions of their Kojas and Maamas.
Later Years and Passing
At the start of Museveni’s Luwero war. Maliyamu, moved into her daughter Jane’s home at Makerere University’s Katalemwa staff housing estate. Later whilst still living with her daughter, she received the diagnosis of terminal cancer of the oesophagus, she passed away in February 1991. Maliyamu Nakimu Nsibirwa Kamya was laid to rest at her Kungu home.
