Early Life
John Sendagire Kigobe was born on 29 September 1939 at Mulago Hospital to Catherine Nakku. He spent his early childhood in Nakulabye, where he was raised, while his school holidays were largely spent in Kamuli, Bugerere, and Namakomo. These places played a significant role in shaping his formative years, grounding him in strong family values and cultural roots that would influence his life and character.
Education and Professional life
John received his secondary education at Mengo Secondary School and later at Lubiri Senior Secondary School. These institutions laid a strong academic foundation that prepared him for a professional career in banking.
Career and Work Life
In 1963, John began his professional career with Standard Chartered Bank of South Africa. His commitment and potential were quickly recognized, leading to further professional training in Nairobi. In 1965, he advanced his banking studies in London, gaining valuable international exposure.
Upon returning to Uganda in 1967, he resumed work with Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, where he built a reputable and respected career. In 1968, the bank sponsored him on an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro, which he successfully completed by reaching the summit—an achievement that reflected his determination and resilience.
Political instability during the Idi Amin regime forced John and his family into exile in Kenya in 1977. After relative political stability was restored, he returned to Uganda in 1980 and continued working with Standard Chartered Bank until his retirement in 1988.
Married Life
In 1972, John married Allen Mukasa Nkata. Their marriage was marked by partnership, resilience, and mutual support, particularly during the challenging period of exile. His wife, later known as Allen Nkata Nsibirwa (RIP), remained a central figure in his personal and family life.
Life After Retirement
After retiring in 1988, John remained active by engaging in private business ventures together with his wife. His post-retirement years were characterised by continued productivity, family involvement, and a commitment to building a stable and sustainable livelihood.
Children and Grandchildren
Together with his wife Allen, they raised and nurtured their children: Primrose Matovu, Harriet Nalwoga, Rhoda Nakanja (RIP), Barbara Namayanja (RIP), Susan Nvumirwa, John Kasirye, Semu Sekajja, Sara Nabasirye, and Lydia Nantale, instilling in them values of perseverance, integrity, and hard work.
He is a proud grandfather to seventeen grandchildren and a great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren.
